Volume is how many shares changed hands — the conviction behind a move. Price tells you WHAT; volume hints WHY.

Level by level

Beginner

Rallies on rising volume are healthier than rallies on fading volume. Breakouts 'should' come with a volume pop — quiet breakouts fail more often.

Intermediate

Climax volume (a huge spike after a long trend) often marks exhaustion; churning (high volume, no progress) warns of distribution or absorption.

Advanced

Volume precedes price in accumulation phases (Wyckoff's core idea). Compare today's volume to its own 20-day average, not to another stock's.

Common mistakes

  • Judging volume without a baseline average
  • Chasing a breakout that nobody showed up for
