Volume Analysis — Reading the Market's Fuel Gauge

guide
Volume is how many shares changed hands — the conviction behind a move. Price tells you WHAT; volume hints WHY.
Level by level
Beginner
Rallies on rising volume are healthier than rallies on fading volume. Breakouts 'should' come with a volume pop — quiet breakouts fail more often.
Intermediate
Climax volume (a huge spike after a long trend) often marks exhaustion; churning (high volume, no progress) warns of distribution or absorption.
Advanced
Volume precedes price in accumulation phases (Wyckoff's core idea). Compare today's volume to its own 20-day average, not to another stock's.
Common mistakes
- Judging volume without a baseline average
- Chasing a breakout that nobody showed up for
