Reading an Income Statement — Where Profit Comes From
7/6/2026
fundamentals
guide
The income statement is a video of the period: revenue at the top, costs subtracted layer by layer, profit at the bottom.
Level by level
Beginner
Follow the staircase: revenue → gross profit → operating profit → net profit. Each step tells you WHERE money leaks.
Intermediate
Margins are the language: gross margin = pricing power; operating margin = discipline; net margin = the whole story. Compare margin TRENDS, not single quarters.
Advanced
Other income propping up net profit is a recurring illusion (treasury gains, one-offs). Operating profit growth at or above revenue growth = operating leverage working FOR you.
Common mistakes
- Judging one quarter instead of the 8-quarter trend
- Missing that profit growth came from other income
