Mutual Funds vs Direct Stocks
7/6/2026
fundamentals
guide
Funds buy you a managed basket; direct stocks buy you control and concentration. Different tools, different jobs.
Level by level
Beginner
If you can't spend a few hours weekly, index funds and SIPs are the honest choice — boring is a feature (the SIP calculator in Tools shows why).
Intermediate
Core-satellite works: index core (70-80 percent) plus a few researched stocks as satellites, sized so mistakes teach without wounding.
Advanced
Most active funds trail their index after fees over a decade — the case for indexing. Direct stocks pay in education and maybe alpha; your journal will tell you which one you're earning.
Common mistakes
- All-in on stock picks with zero index core
- Judging fund skill on one hot year
