MACD turns two EMAs (12 and 26) into one momentum line, plus a 9-period signal line and a histogram of the gap between them.
Level by level
Beginner
When the MACD line crosses above the signal line, momentum is turning up; crossing below, turning down. The histogram just makes that gap easy to see.
Intermediate
Zero-line context matters: crossovers ABOVE zero are continuation signals in uptrends; below zero, in downtrends. Crossovers against the zero-line side are weaker.
Advanced
Histogram divergence (price new high, histogram lower high) often leads the signal-line cross. MACD lags by design — pair it with structure (S/R) for location.
Common mistakes
- Trading every crossover in a sideways market (whipsaw city)
- Ignoring which side of zero the cross happens on
