EPS — Earnings Per Share Explained
7/6/2026
fundamentals
guide
EPS = net profit divided by share count: the profit attached to each share you own.
Level by level
Beginner
Rising EPS over years is the cleanest business-is-growing signal a beginner can track.
Intermediate
Watch DILUTED EPS (counts options and convertibles) and EPS growth vs revenue growth — profit growing without sales growing has a short shelf life (cost cuts run out).
Advanced
Buybacks inflate EPS without operational improvement; one-off items distort single quarters. Normalise: core EPS trend over 8-12 quarters is the signal, one quarter is noise.
Common mistakes
- Celebrating an EPS beat built on a one-time asset sale
- Ignoring dilution from ESOPs in growth companies
