Dividend Yield — Income From Stocks
7/6/2026
Yield = annual dividend divided by price: the cash the company pays you for holding it.
Level by level
Beginner
A 3 percent yield beats a 2 percent one — IF the dividend survives. Yield rises when price falls, so juicy yields are sometimes funerals in progress.
Intermediate
Check the payout ratio (dividends divided by profit): under about 60 percent leaves room for bad years; near 100 is a cut waiting for a trigger. Dividend GROWTH history beats today's yield.
Advanced
Yield traps cluster before cuts — the market prices the cut before the announcement. Free-cash-flow coverage matters more than earnings coverage; total return = yield + growth, judge both.
Common mistakes
- Buying the highest yield on the screener
- Ignoring whether cash flow actually covers the payout
