Breakout Trading — Catching Moves as They Start

guide
A breakout is price escaping a range or pattern — the auction agreeing on a new direction.
Level by level
Beginner
The checklist: a CLOSE beyond the level (not a poke), volume expansion, and room to the next level. Two of three minimum.
Intermediate
False breakouts are the tax: the retest entry (break, pull back to the level, holds) pays a better price and filters half the fakes.
Advanced
Failed breakouts are signals in reverse (spring/upthrust) — a failed breakdown that snaps back is one of the strongest longs in the book. Measure targets from the pattern height (calculator in Tools).
Common mistakes
- Buying the poke instead of the close
- No plan for the retest — panic-selling the normal pullback
