ADX — Measuring Trend Strength

guide
ADX doesn't care about direction — it measures whether a trend EXISTS. Below about 20: chop. Above 25: trending. Above 40: strong.
Level by level
Beginner
Check ADX before choosing your playbook: trend tools (MAs, breakouts) in high ADX; range tools (oscillators, S/R fades) in low ADX.
Intermediate
The +DI/-DI lines add direction: +DI above -DI with rising ADX is textbook uptrend confirmation.
Advanced
Falling ADX after a long trend signals energy draining — tighten trails. ADX is derived from smoothed directional movement, so it lags turns; treat it as regime, not trigger.
Common mistakes
- Using breakout strategies when ADX says chop
- Reading ADX direction as price direction
